How to Close a Spiritual Door in Prayer: A Biblical Framework

There are many times when we open a door in the realm of the spirit, granting an entity access to our soul, which consists of our mind, our will, and our emotions. What I’ve come to notice, especially in Pentecostal spaces, is that when the oppression from the open door begins to manifest in a believers life, many often respond with the words, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” Now whilst that may sound spiritual and even seem effective for a moment, it does not actually address the root issue that gave the spirit access in the first place.
To understand why, you first need to learn how the spiritual realm operates. If there’s one thing to remember, it’s that the spiritual realm is a legal realm. YHWH, the God of heaven and earth, is One of order and structure, and His throne is established on righteousness and justice (Psalm 89:14). God does not act arbitrarily or ignore His own standards, meaning if a spiritual entity is permitted to oppress a believer who has been set free in Jesus Christ, then there is an access point that has given it legal grounds to remain. That specific access point is what the enemy uses to bring accusations before God, and until those legal grounds are dealt with, simply rebuking the spirit does not resolve the underlying issue that removes their access.
What Is a Spiritual Door?
In simple terms, a spiritual door is an access point.
If you picture your soul as a house, the spiritual door would be any point of entry into that house. It might be a small crack in a window, a door left slightly open, or even a house that has been left wide open and unguarded.
Scripture calls us to guard the gates of our heart because everything we do flows from it (Provers 4:23). This teaches us that what we allow through our eye gate, ear gate, and mouth gate ultimately shapes what is planted within us. Therefore we’re required to remain spiritually alert, sober-minded, and discerning, recognising the schemes of the enemy before he gains access (1 Peter 5:8). Remember that we’re not fighting against flesh and blood, we’re fighting against powers, principalities and rulers of the air (Ephesians 6:12). A spirit entity has no right to simply invade and oppress your soul. Just like all of creation, they are governed by the laws God established from His throne. So for darkness to gain access, there must first be an exchange of agreement in the realm of the spirit. That agreement gives the enemy legal grounds to operate, and in His justice, God permits those grounds to remain until they are renounced and dealt with. This means that when you engage with something and knowingly or unknowingly come into agreement with it, you open the door for that entity to gain a foothold in the house of your soul.
How are Spiritual Doors Opened?
There are a lot of different entry points. Many times doors are opened through deliberate sin. Other times they are opened through ignorance, compromise, the entertainment we consume, ungodly relationships, occult practices, unforgiveness, bitterness, fear, or agreeing with lies. Although the doorway itself may look different, the principle is always the same: agreement creates access.
Once that access has been established, the effects often become noticeable. For example, you may begin experiencing intrusive thoughts that are persistent and difficult to simply “stop thinking” about. Maybe you find yourself replaying arguments in your mind, becoming increasingly angry every time you dwell on them. Or, maybe you find yourself being drawn into sexual fantasies that play like a movie in your mind, pulling you towards self-pleasure. You know that you genuinely do not want to engage, and whilst you try to fight it with your own strength, there’s something that keeps drawing you back. It’s almost as though you’re no longer fully in control, and a voice keeps urging you to just give in so the pressure will stop.
This is spiritual warfare. In these moments, God is not asking you to fight in your own strength because the truth is, you can’t. He is calling you to exercise the authority He has already given you in Christ. As children of God, we do not need to fear the battle. Our spirit is seated with Christ in the heavenly realms, and we have been given authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.
That being said, authority is not passive; it must be exercised. If an open door is left unaddressed, the enemy will continue taking advantage of the access that has been given, bringing increasing disruption into the very place God intended to be at peace. Our responsibility is to apply the finished work of Christ and enforce the authority He has entrusted to us.
Never forget that you are not fighting for victory, but from the position Christ has already secured for you.
The Pattern Revealed in Leviticus 4
During my intimate time with the Holy Spirit, He showed the underlying judicial pattern of dealing with sin before God, and that pattern mirrors the way we should pray when addressing spiritual access, accusations, or strongholds today.
Before I take you through the prayer itself, I first want to show you the pattern the Holy Spirit revealed to me. I don’t believe in simply giving someone a fish; I believe in teaching them how to fish for themselves. Lasting deliverance come through understanding, so let’s root what the Holy Spirit showed me in Scripture. Take your time to grasp this, because once you understand the foundation, the prayer itself will make complete sense.
Leviticus 4:27-30 (NLT) says:
27 “If any of the common people sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands, but they don’t realize it, they are still guilty.
28 When they become aware of their sin, they must bring as an offering for their sin a female goat with no defects.
29 They must lay a hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place where burnt offerings are slaughtered.
30 Then the priest will dip his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.
Notice the pattern:
Guilty of Sin → Revelation of Sin → Confession of Sin → Blood of the Animal Presented Before God → Restored Standing
What the Holy Spirit revealed to me is that the pattern of how we are to come before Him hasn’t changed. The fulfilment and sacrifice have.
In Leviticus 4, whenever sin was revealed, there was an order that followed. The problem was never dealt with randomly or emotionally. God had established a process, and every part of that process pointed towards Jesus Christ, who would ultimately fulfil it once and for all.
So under the New Covenant, we no longer bring the blood of bulls and goats. We bring the blood of Christ before the Father by faith. Everything the Old Covenant sacrifice pointed towards has now been fulfilled in Him. When we pray, we are not creating a new sacrifice or trying to earn God’s forgiveness. We are applying the finished work of Jesus Christ to the specific situation before us through the blood He shed on our behalf.
The Old Covenant pattern is fulfilled in the New Covenant like this:
Revelation of Sin from the Holy Spirit → Confession of Sin → Repentance → Blood of Christ Presented Before God → Legal Grounds Revoked → Authority Is Exercised
Notice that the process begins with revelation. We cannot confess what has not first been revealed, and we cannot genuinely repent of a sin we’re not aware of. This is why the Holy Spirit always leads the process. He reveals the access point, and our role is simply to respond in obedience to what He shows us.
Earlier I mentioned that many believers jump straight to saying, “I rebuke you!” Hopefully you can now see why that isn’t always effective. Whilst there is absolutely a place for rebuking the enemy, our authority is exercised most effectively after the issue of legal grounds has been dealt with.
In Leviticus, the priest never dealt with the consequence before dealing with the cause. The issue of guilt was addressed before God through the sacrifice. Only then could restoration follow. The enemy’s defeat was never based on how loud someone’s rebuke was, but on the fact that every accusation had been answered through sacrifice.
The same principle applies under the New Covenant. Christ has already answered every accusation through His death, burial, and resurrection. Our role is simply to apply His finished work to the specific place where the agreement was made, trusting that His blood has already answered every accusation against us.
Applying the Pattern
Now that we’ve established the pattern, let’s put it into practice. As you pray, here’s what you’re doing in the realm of the spirit:
- Confess – acknowledge the specific sin the Holy Spirit has revealed to you.
- Repent – break your agreement with that sin.
- Apply the Blood – bring the blood of Christ before the Father by faith, trusting that every accusation has already been answered.
- Revoke Access – declare that every legal ground the enemy held against you has now been removed.
- Exercise Your Authority – command unclean spirits associated with that agreement to leave and silence them.
- Give Thanks – thank God that Christ has already secured the victory and that you stand in Him.
The prayer below is not a formula. It is a framework to help you begin so that you don’t remain paralysed or overwhelmed. Do not feel that you have to repeat these words exactly as they are written. Instead, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you through each step, making the prayer personal to your own circumstances. Where He brings specific sins, people, memories, or agreements to mind, pause and speak openly with the Father. The power is not found in the wording itself, but in the finished work of Christ that you are applying by faith. Take your time as you move through each step. If the Holy Spirit brings something specific to mind, pause there before moving on.
Step 1: Confess
Father, I come before Your throne and confess that I have sinned against You in my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I ask You to search my heart and bring to mind every place where I have come into agreement with sin.
I confess…
[Begin speaking through every specific sin the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. If possible, be specific.]
E.g:
I confess that I watched Love Island
I confess that I listened to secular music that spoke about sex, drugs and alcohol, which does not glorify you
I confess that I meditated on sexually perverted thoughts
I confess that I watched pornography and engaged in masturbation
I confess that I slandered and gossiped about…
I confess that I have not loved my neighbour as you commanded
I confess that I overconsumed food instead of exercising self-control
I confess that I yielded to the voice of fear, instead of walking in the faith you asked of me
Step 2: Repent and Renounce Agreements
I repent for every one of these sins that I have knowingly committed, as well as any unknown sins that may have granted the enemy legal grounds to access my life.
I renounce every agreement I have made with the kingdom of darkness and I sever every attachment I have made with unclean spirits in the name of Jesus. I withdraw my agreement with them completely and come back into agreement and alignment with You alone.
Step 3: Bring the Blood of Christ Before the Father
I present the blood of Jesus Christ before You by faith. I thank You that His blood was shed for my sins and that every accusation against me has already been answered through His finished work on the cross. I declare that I have been justified by faith and redeemed through the blood of Jesus. Your Word says that whom the Son sets free is free indeed. The blood of Jesus speaks forever, and it speaks louder than the blood of Abel.
Step 4: Revoke Every Legal Ground
Therefore, I revoke every legal ground the enemy has been using to operate in my life. I declare that every door opened through my agreement with sin is now closed through the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Step 5: Exercise Your Authority
Because every legal ground has now been removed, I command every unclean spirit to leave now in the name of Jesus Christ. You no longer have any authority or legal right to remain.
[If you can identify the spirit involved, be specific and command it to leave. For example: “I command the spirit of fear to leave”]
I silence every voice that is not the voice of the Holy Spirit. Every lying voice, every accusing voice, every condemning voice, every tempting voice, and every voice of fear, shame, confusion, lust, or deception, be silent now in the name of Jesus Christ. I hear the voice of my Shepherd, and the voice of a stranger I will not follow.
Step 6: Give Thanks
Father, I thank You that I stand in the victory Christ has already won for me. Thank You that I have been justified by faith, redeemed by the blood of Jesus, and that every accusation against me has been answered through His finished work. Amen.
Praying with Authority
The effectiveness of your prayer is not determined by how loud you are. It’s determined by the truth you’re standing on and the words you’re speaking.
Don’t think you need to shout in order to be effective.
What gives your prayer authority is the revelation you’ve received from the Holy Spirit, your understanding of God’s Kingdom, and your ability to rightly wield the Word of God.
Your weapon is not your tone, your volume, or your zeal. Your weapon is the truth of God’s Word spoken in faith.
When you understand the finished work of Christ, recognise the access point the Holy Spirit has revealed, and apply His victory to that specific area of your life, you are no longer praying from a place of fear or striving. You are enforcing the victory that Jesus Christ has already won.
